September 2022
This September, students will be participating in components of Daily 5, which include Read to Self, Read to Someone, Word Work, Work on Writing, and Listen to Reading. In the following weeks, students will learn about fiction and non-fiction texts, where they will study the difference between the text features. Throughout the month, students will be exploring how oral traditions are shared and will have the opportunity to participate in classroom sharing circles. The grade 2’s will also be working towards expanding their vocabulary by recording new words found in texts in a variety of ways. Students will work on phonological awareness and segmenting sounds with consonant blends daily. The grade 2’s will be working on making connections to texts as well as choosing ‘just right' books and building stamina. Upon completing activities within the classroom, students will have the chance to share their experiences with one another. Students have been working on writing complete sentences and using their editing checklist to ensure they use capitalization and punctuation appropriately.

Word Work Books: Grade 2 focus words will be introduced weekly. You will find your child's new weekly words in their agenda every Monday. Please choose 2-3 activities to practice each week with your child to enhance their ability to read, spell and read these high frequency words.
Independent Reading Practice: Please use Raz-kids or their home reading books to have your child practice their reading skills on a daily basis. On Raz-Kids they are able to select a book to read or listen to. They will then be challenged with comprehension questions to check for understanding. Please ensure that your child completes the comprehension component.
