.Our selected children’s book to enhance and foster a deeper understanding of our theme is, “I Am One: A Book of Action”, by Susan Verde and Illustrated by Peter Reynolds. This book addresses an important issue of community activism. The author urges even the youngest community members to contribute in some small way to make change. Our theme book makes a bold statement about the power of the individual to change the world by their actions. From the start of the story, the tiny main character asks a colourful bird, “How do I make a difference?” She doubts her ability to make a difference because she is “so small”. However, when the bird gives her a seed, she realizes that “beautiful things start with just One”. As the main character breaks down her literal wall, she also realizes that her actions can bridge gaps to create joy. Gentle words start conversations and friendships. Acts of kindness start human connections. Tender hugs start caring relationships. Lighting a candle can start progress. Making a drop in the water can lead to ripple effects that traverse oceans and borders. We have many examples, past and present of people who through small daily actions have and continue to make an impact on the lives of many. The powerful message of this book is clear, every human being, no matter how young or old, can start taking actions which will lead to positive change. Each of us can make a difference in our community and our world. This story emphasizes the importance of understanding the power of one as we each let our light shine for the glory of God.

Welcome to the start of the start of the 2022-23 school year! Our theme this year is inspired by Matthew 5:16, “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” This passage speaks about the same way in which a city on a hill cannot be hidden, or a lamp in a room should not be hidden, we are to let our light shine. It should be obvious by our actions that we belong to Christ. Jesus says that what should be seen are the good deeds that we perform for the glory of God. The key here is glory. Who gets the glory when our righteousness is noticed by others? Sometimes we will be praised by people for what we do for God, which is fine, but truly it comes down to the attitude of our hearts in the deed we perform. That is what is important as Jesus instructs us to live righteously for God’s sake and to do nothing out of selfish ambition. Those who seek the praise of men will receive no other reward, but those who live unto God before the world will reflect God to a hurting planet and be rewarded in Heaven. Again, this is the key behind the motive of living out the Christian life and the instruction of Christ before others. Those with eyes to see will glorify God in Heaven. Anything done for the glory of God will lead to reward in the next life but will also result in abundant life in this one. Seek first the Kingdom of God and have perfect peace. You will be like a city on a hill, unable to be hidden. So, with this scripture to inspire each of us, we are called to reflect on how we ‘Let Our Light Shine Forth... For the Glory of God.
